quote-of-the-day
Driver is banned for going 160mph. Judge: You are so irresponsible, driving your car as fast as it will go. Driver: That isn't as fast as it will go, I've had 180 out of it before (True story from UK) (Daily quote.)

Ed the Editor's personal blog corner

Driving around you see all sorts of sights on the road.

We have all killed a deer or a dog or a cat whilst speeding around in our car, right? No? Well, plenty of people do, intentionally, or otherwise. As usual, someone thinks of a weird angle and releases a recipe book specialising in dishes made from road kill victims. Pheasant a la ferrari, duck a l'orange honda, Chevy cat pie... gross but almost true.

Fed-Ex and UPS compete with the US Postal Service. Talk about unfair competition between drivers. Being a government entity, posties are immune from prosecution from double parking. Fed Ex and UPS enjoy no such luck. Double parked delivery trucks generate loads of revenue for city halls, and rack up major overheads for Fed-Ex and UPS.

Our advice is for UPS and Fed Ex to deliver parcels and packages to city halls on foot. They will never get complaints from lazy ass officials about late mail. In fact they may even get a pat on the back for providing them with a ready made excuse for their innate inefficiency.

quote-of-the-day
I don't suffer with a fear of the unknown per se. What is scary is being scared of something in the future that I am not scared of now. (Daily quote.)

Ed the Editor's personal blog corner

That quote about fear is an adaptation of a wise word or two from Antoine De Saint-Exupery, don't you know!

Talking of scary, remember the sci-fi days, of black and white TV, stage sets that shook when doors were opened, and text book, profanity-free dialog was spoken by wooden actors battling the most tame monsters imaginable?

Fortunately for the script writers, young kids back then had a fertile imagination. I can remember a lot of bed times being punctuated with fear. First, I would imagine the bears bursting in and eating me as punishment for stepping on cracks in the sidewalk. If that didn't make me wet the bed, I would sure as hell terrify myself with the thought of yetis or the Ice Warriors from
Dr Who walking into my bedroom to destroy me.

In Dr Who, the yetis were furry creatures made of cast iron and somehow they killed people in a most ear-piercing way. (You never got to see the evil deeds in any detail, such was the concern of directors not to really scare the audience shitless?) In the real world, the yetis lived in the London Underground, which sort of explains the number of general disruptions to service, plus the years of delays building the Jubilee Line.

The Ice Warriors were the really scary dudes though. Big reptilian humanoids with ray guns built into their wrists. From memory, their voices were the most mortifying part of the act, though. They whispered in earnest, and threatened in hushed voices. Golly Doctor, the hackles are rising just thinking about it.

So, the fear of the unknown is mighty potent when you think long and hard. Maybe the mindless invasion of arcade games and playstation into kids' lives isn't so evil afterall. Has anyone ever wet the bed thinking of Mario brothers?

You won an award for ethics. It paid off for you. Doesn't that represent a conflict of interests? (Stephen Colbert talking to a Senator for Tennessee.) (Daily quote.)

Ed the Editor's personal blog corner

Getting back up in the saddle is hard on a Monday morning. So I waited till this evening to blog instead!

Ever had a day when a lot of pennies dropped in your mind and life took on a new dimension? It happened to me this weekend, and I was not in a church.

Reading a blog about blogging, it dawned on me that I had been writing lots of material, but a lot of it has gone unread. The reason is, that once an article has disappeared into the archives, nobody, except real fans, are ever going to find it. As we have as many fans as Howard K Stern, our old articles will probably never be found, unless new posts include deep links back to those old ones. Deep links will revive the obsolete topics, give them relevance, and overall improve the quality and depth of material on The Pisstakers. Thank you John Chow for the tip.

Then a second penny dropped. Watching Stephen Colbert, I realised I ain't that funny. But as someone pointed out, he has a team of writers and the benefit of editing, so of course he has a slight advantage. And the third realisation was that in my long term game plan, the idea has always been to have a team of writers at The Pisstakers. So, until the collaboration materialises, I better try hard and keep doggy paddling in a sea of satire till we can float everyone's boat.

In honor of real life being funnier than fiction, and following the advice of a master blogger, there will now be a series of links back to
Overheard In posts that have been sitting snugly in the archives.

Thanks for taking time out your schedule.
