Solitaire for Penguins and Scorpions

At first glance, it read like "Solitaire for Penguins and Scorpions." But on closer inspection, that wasn't the story at all. Apparently developer, Ian Humphreys has been working on Solitaire for the blind, and they were just a couple of titles he publishes in very large fonts.

Solitaire, a sign of the times

You know when you've had an overdose of the new millenium, it's been years since you've played solitaire with a real deck of cards.

Free play Solitaire isn't for fun?

According to this description from a download site that favors Windows software, Free Play Solitaire may not be for fun.

Play a number of free solitaire games on your Windows based PC. Either play against the clock for points and compete online against some of the best solitaire players in the world, or play one of six non competitive solitaire games for fun.

I would love to know who these best players in the world are. Their profile would be male, Under 14, and called Earnest, Carrot Top, or Johnny No friends.

Solitaire til dawn - the ultimate in obscure

SOLITAIRE TILL DAWN 3.4 offers over 30 different varieties of solitaire, with a drag-and-drop user interface and easy undo. The games vary from the simple to the very complex.

Sounds almost compelling enough to try before buying. Until you realise the software requires System 7.x to run. Like er what? Which version of Windows is 7.x? Wrong. This system OS, codenamed Big Bang, was hip in the obscure Mac world in 1991!! Isn't it time to delete this kids domain web page?

Peg solitaire

Solitaire, the computer bored game, is installed on hundreds of millions of PCs and about 3 Macs. It also comes in other challenging forms on other devices. Like Peg Solitaire on a mobile phone.

Peg Solitaire has apparently made it to cell phones these days.  Viewer Bart wrote asking for help in solving the game on his.  It turns out that this is hardest solvable one I've seen so far.  I didn't find any shortcuts but Peg Solitaire Version 3 finds a solution for one peg left in the center hole in about and hour after trying 4.3 billion moves!

Is this guy some sort of robot? How do you do 4.3 billion anythings in an hour? This is all too much to take in for us simpleton pisstakers.

See all the gory details of the evolution of this kid's game, adopted by adults, on this Delphi for fun homage to the game.

Solitaire 9 trillion combinations

Solitaire is pretty low tech, and subsequently it is usually a freebie handout on a computer. However, it is scary just how costly a FREE product can prove to be in the hands of a weak mind.
123 Free Solitaire features a winning layout, fast game play, rich sounds, extensive options, and quality help. Each game has more than nine trillion (9,999,999,999,999) possible shuffles to play, so the game remains fresh no matter how many times you play.

No wonder it captures the attention of so many people for so long. They play on the addiction of trying to beat such an annoying game (he says, having played twice before giving up in boredom.) and it should certainly come with a Government health warning right now. Not even Tony Blair has got that many moves.

Thanks to these Solitaire experts for the enlightening story.

Solitaire or patience or...

Solitaire is also known as Patience, especially in the UK. Shouldn't it be renamed Mind-numbing, or 4Numbskulls? In fact it is so deathly boring that the French probably have the best name for it, Réussite, which they claim means Success, but more likely was a misspelt form of resuscitate.

Quite frightening how far humans can take an idea. Apparently there are as many as 1000 slight variations of this game. Help. Even Whist sounds like fun now.

Solitaire world record?

As with all fields of human endeavour, Solitaire included, someone somewhere has to push the limits. This East European, or maybe Russian poster on the Geek games forum claims the following. If it is true, (s)he really needs to question whether being priviliged is such a big deal! They even got banned from the forum.

In my prime i had a score of 26 seconds and back in my home land my fellow students would run a solitare club were we would all compete ever day to keep our minds strong. Being a geek as you put it was a great privlidge as it showed that you are educated and came from a respected family. - by Boryenka Samochernyi

Solitaire - the game they tried to ban!

You have to ask yourself, if someone is so bored that playing solitaire is stimulating, then the problem is not with the game, it's with the job (From csmonitor.com).

From Karl Marx to Tom Peters, many great minds have tried to get the most out of the workers. You have to wonder, though, how many years does it take for business people to advance their thinking. It sounds like US office workers are increasingly going through the motions in working conditions, that apart from swish lighting, aircon and comfy seats, (plus solitaire for now) are akin to life pre Karl marx!

Quantity is more important than quality.

Even high performance drug-pimping athletics coaches have realised that performance improves if people aren't worked to death. But no, business is different, it isn't real life! Rather than empower people to work hard and with a spring in their step, the law makers want to take away another liberty and diversion, Solitaire!

It sounds like the great mind games are actually in the legislative halls not on the bored employee's computer screen.

Solitaire, the only game on Vista?

solitaire-thumb
According to Techboggle, Microsoft Vista has shut out loads of online gaming options. We aren't talking poker and blackjack, silly. The Operating System has crippled the options for high flying business people to spend their days online playing golf or shooting 'em up, down and sideways. So now, Solitaire can really come into its own.

Maybe it is time to take care with our sarcastic comments about Solitaire. It can be a dangerous business for many addictive personalities/losers!
