What is out in the ocean?

Ed the Editor's personal blog corner

This is a trip down memory lane:

Remember the urban myth, that we know more about space than we do about the oceans? When you next stare out to sea, or jump in a boat or go fishing, you should be afraid, be very afraid.

This is a trip down memory lane:

Remember the urban myth, that we know more about space than we do about the oceans? When you next stare out to sea, or jump in a boat or go fishing, you should be afraid, be very afraid.

When you jump in a boat, are you sure it will float? It should do, according to what we know of buoyancy and water displacement. But if we know so much, how come so many boats have sunk in the Bermuda Triangle without any explanation? And if you are in a plane, just because your compass doesn't work, why would you freak out so much that you fly straight into the ocean?

In the astounding Jacques Cousteau Museum in Monte Carlo, they are supposed to have a copy of every fish ever documented by science - at least up until the time I was there in 198? So where is the Monster from the black lagoon. Or don't lagoons count?

Looking at waves, you can see sea horses skipping across the surf. But do these sea horses exist in reality? Although you can't catch them or ride them, t is possible they are real, because nobody has ever documented an exploration program where they have gone looking specifically for an underwater stable - and not found one.

One day, the land and its resources will be all used up and the lucky ones will be living in the sea or in space. Best to start reading up on them a bit more so you can avoid the dangers, or be ready to face them!
