Chinese Valentines Day
Feb07 Filed in: Valentines Day
Who says Valentines is a purely Western commercial enterprise propagated by card makers and flower peddlers? The Chinese may march to a different tune politically, and they may celebrate on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, but they still go a bit batty for love once a year.
If the contents of the website are to be believed, and Google hasn't been persuaded to censor out the the truth, then Valentines Day in China is quite the event. Fortunately red roses don't seem that big a deal. Imagine the world's oxygen level dropping to danger level as 1 billion roses were plucked from the ecosystem.
If you sell needles, young girls striving to become master? weavers will flock to your store to buy one so they can place it in a container full of water. If the needle floats they have sufficient knowledge to become craftswomen, and they can make a wish. (If you can sew you make a good wife anywhere in the world, but it seems more important in China.)
If the needle sinks, they get their hand wet picking it out and trying it again and again till it does float.
China on Valentines is not a rose tinted paradise

Lots of pricks on Valentines Days
