John Chow screwed royally with Technorati

John Chow used his evil streak to questionable effect when he tried to outsmart Technorati with some deceptive pinging software. The bottom line is, he got caught.
Imagine if someone else had pulled the same beat the Technorati ranking stunt. In a short space of time they got found out, played dumb with Technorati, in order to get reinstated - and then admitted to the deception publicly before it came out by mistake.
For many fans, it doesn't matter too much that John Chow will probably get away with his erroneous behavior. Afterall, he is consistently pushing the online marketing envelope, trying new things and making his discoveries public so everyone can learn from his mistakes (few) and his successes (many). So I guess, as a fan, I would say that this was one of his "failures" that will educate the masses into playing fair.
If you adopt a more detached view, it would not be unreasonable to decry John Chow as a prime example of all that is bad about people who abuse their power and clout to get even further ahead than they already are. As one of the most visited bloggers on the internet, he was already increasing his prestigious Technorati ranking with a cool review for links program. Like falling off a log, he was gradually and steadily and fairly improving his ranking in Technorati. It wasn't like he was in a desperate position and short of ideas! But that wasn't good enough.
John Chow tried to manipulate figures to his own advantage, got caught, and outed himself. Fair enough. But it raised my hackles when he tried to make it sound OK, by saying that at least he had shunted everyone with links to him further up the Technorati pile. Thanks for almost nothing.
As a fair-minded pisstaker, I would sum up the whole questionable episode as: Thankyou John Chow for confirming that until something changes with Technorati algorithms, the rankings and the related valuations of a blog, are really worth jack. And since my involvement with the review for link program, it has been a hollow "victory" - 50000 higher up Technorati, coinciding with 5% less traffic. Nobody's fault, just the karma from manipulating Technorati?
