Crypt Hunter, The Chronicles of Memphis review

crypt-hunter-large

In this day and age of safe living, homogenization and dumbing down, what a relief to know that there are some real life adventurers still determined to seek out action and danger. Not sure how many of the dormant vicarious masses read Crypt Hunter, The Chronicles of Memphis, but they should, because the blog is a great mix of fact, fiction, and well off-the-wall ideas.

First impressions of The Crypt Hunter

From the title, I imagined Indian Jones. Yes, evidence indeed of how easy it is to be tainted by mass media. There is more to real life than Hollywood and shame on me for forgetting real tomb raiders, like Tutankhamen pillager and cursed bowler hat wearer, Howard Carter.

Characters real and imagined; artefacts and adventurers' accessories real and imagined, and myths, er, just imagined, they all get an airing in the easy-to-read blog.

Real life crypt hunters

It is fascinating to read the interview with Josh Bernstein and William Dietrich, who have racked up a few adventures and miles under their snake-skin belts. I haven't checked their credentials, but even if they don't exist in real life, then I can assure you, I know of two genuine humans who almost fit their bill! (Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford.)

Accursed bowler hats.

Site author and crypt hunter in training, Memphis, makes recurring references to bowler hatted despots who often run off with artefacts that don't belong to them. Presumably he is addressing Britain's former colonial cousins? The ones around the globe who can't let go of the historical truth that British adventurers helped that tiny nation rule the world by committing such atrocities on a widespread scale?

Anyway, if they ignore the bowler hat references, then even UK readers should enjoy the whole of the crypt-hunting experience on offer.

Crypt hunting conclusion

All in all, a jolly jape. This blog offers a fun way to spend a few minutes now and again delving into an exciting world of magic carpets, sock-wearing explorers and escapism. Rest assured, Memphis has plenty to teach any wannabe adventure-seeker with the will to give up their day job, and is a good home for real life crypt hunters wanting to share their experiences.
